Military-history buffs won’t want to miss The Military Museums when in Calgary. Here, eight museums and galleries come together to chronicle Canada’s air force, army and naval history. The attraction’s riveting exhibits span the 1885 Northwest Rebellion, the Boer War, World War I, World War II and the more recent conflicts in Afghanistan.

As the largest triservice museum in western Canada, this spacious complex reels in both young and old with impressive displays of genuine military tanks, armoured vehicles, fighter planes and naval weapons. The museum also houses lifelike models, dioramas, historical photographs and other military artefacts. The extensive on-site military-history library is open to the public and brimming with more than 20,000 books documenting the history of warfare and myriad military topics.

The incredible six-by-four-metre Mural of Honour greets you when you enter The Military Museums’ atrium. The mural is a collaborative artwork comprising 240 images that represent Canada’s military history; it also features five works of World War II artists. The gift shop carries a unique range of books, miniatures, board games and collectables to help you commemorate your visit.

The Military Museums is a less than 15-minute drive from downtown Calgary. A number of buses service The Military Museums, including the 7 or 107 South Calgary, 13 Mount Royal or 63 Lakeview Express bus services for drop-off within three blocks of the attraction. After spending a few hours soaking up everything there is to see at The Military Museums, why not kick back with a visit to the nearby Wild Rose Brewery on Quesnay Wood Drive for a local Albertan brew and some delicious Canadian-style pub grub?
