Rising 191 metres into the sky, Calgary Tower in the city’s downtown district is a great first stop for visitors to Calgary, as it offers spectacular 360-degree views of the surrounds, numerous landmarks and the majestic Rocky Mountains in the distance. If you can handle the heights, the thrilling glass-floored observation deck makes for a memorable photo opportunity as you marvel at the city streets below.

Entry into Calgary Tower includes a complimentary guided tour, which will walk you through the history of Calgary and point out key landmarks that you can see from the observation deck. Touchscreen multimedia devices enhance the experience even more, providing a fun way to learn revealing facts about the surrounding areas. The tower opened to the public in 1968, a year after Canada’s centennial.

In the wee hours of the morning (5am till sunrise) and from dusk until midnight, Calgary Tower puts on a colourful LED lightshow for the city and its visitors. Just before sunset is a great time to experience the tower, as you can witness Calgary’s magnificent transition from daylight to still-vibrant darkness as the city lights begin to sparkle. For a delectable lunch or dinner with an equally delicious view, the Sky 360 revolving restaurant on the tower’s top level does a full revolution every 45 minutes at lunchtime or every hour for dinner. The tower is open every day except Christmas Day.

Just one block north of the tower is the Stephen Avenue Walk, a pedestrian-only street where you can browse boutiques and admire historic buildings such as the Old City Hall and the iconic Hudson’s Bay department store. Calgary Tower is a short walk from a number of downtown CTrain stations, including 1st Street SW and Centre Street. Bus stops 5518, 3884 and 7380 are also nearby.
