If you’re looking to trace the history of winemaking in the stunning Margaret River region of Western Australia, then start at Vasse Felix. Founded in 1967 by Dr Thomas Cullity, this was the first-ever estate to pioneer what the Margaret River is now famous for the world over – crafting exquisite wines that captivate both the palate and the heart.

A visit to Vasse Felix is a luxurious multisensory experience; the estate is home not only to one of the most in-demand cellar doors in the area, but also to a critically acclaimed restaurant, an art gallery (in the original winery building) and a wine lounge. Make your way to the lounge to kick back with a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon or Chardonnay (specialties of the estate and the region) and a gourmet sharing platter as you bask in the picturesque views of the vineyard.

Tours of this prestigious estate include the ‘Original Tour’, a two-hour behind-the-scenes look and wine-tasting experience, during which you can wander through the first grape vines ever planted in Margaret River. True foodies and wine lovers may want to upgrade to the epicurean tour, where you’ll also enjoy three sumptuous courses expertly paired with the finest Vasse Felix wines at the award-winning restaurant. It’s a match made in culinary heaven.

Vasse Felix sits in the Wilyabrup subregion of Margaret River, with a number of other wineries as its neighbours. (The closest is Juniper Estate off Tom Cullity Drive.) The cellar door and art gallery are open every day from 10am to 5pm. The restaurant is open for lunch daily from noon to 3pm. Also nearby is the Cheeky Monkey Brewery & Cidery, where you can briefly set down your wine glass to sample some born-and-brewed Margaret River craft beers and refreshingly crisp ciders.
