If you are visiting Launceston and enjoy a good beer, you won’t want to miss the opportunity to take it up a notch by signing on for a tour of the James Boag’s Brewery – Tasmania’s famously delicious beer exporter. Here you will get the chance to step inside the historic brewery and sample a range of the finest amber beverages on offer.

Brewing beers on the banks of Launceston’s North Esk River since 1881, James Boag’s Brewery is a Launceston institution – the name now recognised far and wide for producing crafted beers using pure Tasmanian water and only the best hops and barley.

The 90-minute tour takes beer enthusiasts on a journey to discover the history of the brewery and provides the opportunity to experience an exclusive look behind the scenes to see how and where the magic happens.

As the original brewery is still crafting beers to this day, visitors will enjoy witnessing all stages of the brewing and packaging process as staff go about their jobs (if touring during operation hours).

The grand finale of the tour is the hearty tasting session of the brewery’s award-winning beers paired with a fine selection of locally made Tasmanian cheeses. Tours begin and wrap-up at the Boag’s Centre for Beer Lovers where there is also a beer museum, gift shop and a bar/cafe where you can draw out the experience a little longer with a few more beers, coffee or light lunch.

Guided tours are conducted seven days a week, although for safety reasons, children under five years of age are not permitted to attend. As you will be visiting a working brewery site, closed-toed shoes must also be worn during the tours.

The Boag’s Brewery and Boag’s Centre for Beer Lovers is conveniently located a short distance from the city centre. Bookings are essential. Nearby attractions include Launceston’s beautiful City Park, home to the John Hart Conservatory and the historic Albert Hall. The park can be accessed from the Beer Centre by turning right off William Street onto Tamar Street.
