Beautiful one day, perfect the next – the sun is on Brisbane’s side, making it the perfect city to slip-slop-slap and get moving. A CDB that winds around the river, Brisbane has plenty of great spots to pound the pavement.

1. Riverwalk

After being rebuilt bigger and better following the devastating 2011 floods, the Riverwalk once again connects the leafy inner-city suburb of New Farm to the CBD. With walking and cycling lanes, there’s plenty of room to get your get your jog on. There are even a few shaded rest areas along the way to stretch and take in the river views.

2. Kangaroo Point

Infamous for its 107 steps, the gruelling ‘KP Stair Climb’ is sure to burn some serious calories. Take on the stairs on their own, or use them as a good warm up / warm down from the Brisbane River Run from the CBD. 

3. City Botanic Gardens

With plenty of shade and foliage, the air is rich and the paths a pleasure to jog. Pass along the river front, mangroves and bamboo groves, weeping fig trees, ponds and sculptures as you get the blood pumping in this inner-city green space.

4. Brisbane River Run

There are three designated River Run routes varying from three to eight kilometres in length. A popular route runs for six kilometres and spans the city waterfront, Botanical Gardens, Goodwill Bridge, Kangaroo Point and across the grand Story Bridge – it’s certainly a great way to catch the city sights!

5. Mt Coot-tha

Get off the concrete path and give trail running a go. With over 50 kilometres of tracks to explore and routes for all levels of fitness, you can take in the fresh smell of gumtrees while scoping great views of the city on the horizon.

6. South Bank

South Bank offers a great, safe, flat and easy run along the riverfront with little-to-no interruptions. Start at Kangaroo Point and wind your way along the river, reaching the end of the boardwalk at GoMA, or even continue your run by looping over into the city on either the Victoria or Kurilpa Bridge.

7. University of Queensland

The UQ River Run circles around the sprawling university, following the bend in the Brisbane River and then along the outskirts of the university grounds though St Lucia. Expect a few inclines along the near 5km run.

8. Teneriffe

Another opportunity to run along the river, this time in the once industrial, wool-store area of Teneriffe. This upmarket suburb is buzzing with trendy cafes and eateries, just one street away from the river. Grab a green juice after your jog from New Farm to Newstead, through Teneriffe.

9. Bicentennial Bikeway

Both a bikeway and walkway, joggers are welcomed along this breezy stretch that runs for almost six kilometres along the banks of the river, adjacent to the city. With several entry and exit points, clock up your best time between Coronation Drive and the Treasury Casino.

10. Roma Street Parkland

Set over 16 sprawling hectares in the centre of the city, Roma Street Parkland is a great spot to take in a leisurely jog. Perhaps even bring a mat and practice some yoga in the tranquil gardens! For more adrenaline pumping, check out the nearby red staircase at Jacob’s Ladder for your stair runs.
