NBA (National Basketball Association)
The NBA is a professional league of 30 teams across North America who play at the highest level and feature the world’s greatest basketball players. The NBA season begins in late October and finishes in April each year.
The top eight teams in each conference face each other in the post season. Teams are given a preliminary ranking and seeded in a specific spot in order of how likely they are to win. Seed No.1 plays No.8 in the first round, No.2 vs No.7 and so forth. A best-of-seven series is featured in each round with two games at the top seed’s home court, two at the lower seed’s home turf and then back and forth one game at a time. The winners of each conference meet in the best-of-seven finals.
Expect a fast paced, white-knuckle experience watching basketball, with some of the tallest and most athletic sportspeople you’ll ever see! The NBA is a great show and should not be missed as part of a great American experience.
NFL (National Football League) & Super Bowl
The National Football League is America’s most popular sports league, comprised of 32 franchises that compete each year to win the Super Bowl, the world’s biggest annual sporting event.
Each team plays sixteen games in the season and has one bye week. At the end of the regular season, the four winning teams and two wild cards from each division take part in the playoffs, which concludes at the Super Bowl between the NFC and the AFC.
American Football’s roots are from rugby so expect grit, intensity and speed from the players on the field – but with extra padding for added effect. Tag along with fans of any of the teams playing and you could find yourself at a tailgate party, where football fans grill food and enjoy a few cold drinks. Experience “America’s Game”.
MLB (Major League Baseball)
The oldest of the four major professional sports in the US, the MLB has a total of 30 teams who play at the top level in the American League (AL) and National League (NL), with 15 teams in each.
The Baseball year begins in April, with the regular series, and runs through to November, ending with the World Series. Each team plays 162 games throughout the season, with five teams from each league making it through to the postseason tournament, the winners of which play in the World Series.
Going to a live baseball game, you’ll witness an analogy for the American way of life. Everyone gets a go at the bat, and if you hit a home run, great job! If you strike out, well, that’s too bad. With a long and deep history in the US, you’ll feel patriotism in the air at any baseball game you go to. Chewing tobacco optional! A can’t-miss experience of Americana.
NHL (National Hockey League)
If you want to experience a real spectacle, including some rough and entertaining sporting prowess, hockey ranks high on the list of must-see sports for people travelling to the USA.
Thirty member clubs, 23 in the US and 7 in Canada, make up the NHL, the world’s premier professional ice hockey league, with headquarters in New York City. The NHL is one of the four major professional sports leagues in the US and attendance figures at live games are high.
There’s no other sport like ice hockey. While the atmosphere in the crowd is electric, the players take a humbler approach to celebrating a goal. Hockey has its own soundtrack too, with the slap of the puck off a stick, players slamming into the glass, the carving of a skate blade on ice and the ping of a puck going off the post.
