FURANO: Lavender Fields Forever.
Even those who are ordinarily unimpressed with flowers will be floored by the eye-popping sight of Furano's flower fields: endless rolling carpets of purple lavender and green grass, backed by the soaring Tokachi mountain range. The July-blooming lavender flowers are the greatest draw, but poppies, lilies, sunflowers, and cosmos all have their own day in the sun from June to September. The Patchwork and Panorama Roads in nearby Biei town make great subjects for landscape photographers in any season, including the winter months when the ground is white but the skies are blue. Winter is also a perfect time to visit the family-friendly Furano Ski Resort, which offers not only 23 world-class skiing and snowboarding slopes but also snowmobiling, snow rafting, and even dog sledding! Hungry? Take advantage of Hokkaido's hands-on farm workshops to chow down on local dairy products like butter, ice cream, and cheese - or make your own! Oishii!
