A sunny city, Calgary is set on the transition point of the Canadian Rockies foothills and prairies in Alberta. Founded by the Northwest Mounted Police in 1876 in response to a surge of whiskey makers who traded for furs from the natives, today the urban cowboys roll amid headquarters of oil and gas industries.
Known for long, dry winters, Calgary hosted the Winter Olympic Games in 1988 and has also invested heavily in tourism. More than 3.1 million people now visit annually – you could grab a flight to Calgary and be one of them – for festivals and attractions, especially July's Calgary Stampede. It's a city readily navigated by bus and rail if not hiring a car and Calgary's popularity has also grown as it's the gateway to nearby mountain resort towns of Banff, Lake Louise and Jasper.
A quick guide to neighbourhoods to visit and things to see:
- The Beltine and 17th Avenue – amid an eclectic bunch of shops, boutiques, bars and restaurants, this is Calgary's party neighbourhood.
- Inglewood – Calgary's oldest neighbourhood and the site of the first city centre, it's now getting an "urban chic" vibe.
- Downtown – sports the Calgary Zoo and Telus World of Science.
- Prince's Island Park – is Calgary's largest inner-city park; in summer it hosts Shakespeare in the Park.
