Asia’s Hottest New Hotels in 2017

9 October 2017

If like us, you’re always on the lookout for an excuse to plan a quick getaway, going to check out some of the hottest new hotels to open in Asia this year is a good a reason as any! With plenty of wanderlust-inducing launches in 2017 across the entire region, we’ve rounded up six of the coolest new kids on the block for you to go explore… let’s call them “research trips”, shall we?

JW Marriott Phu Quoc

JW Marriott Phu Quoc Emerald Bay Resort, Vietnam

Architect Bill Bensley is renowned for his seriously swoon-worthy hotel designs (TIME dubbed him “the king of exotic luxury resorts”), and he’s done it again with the JW Marriott Phu Quoc Emerald Bay. Themed around a mythical university, this is aesthetic irreverence done with a sweeping sense of gorgeous grandeur; the property’s 244 rooms, suites and villas are divided into wings named after different academic apartments, with whimsical details aplenty in the shape of over 5000 vintage and antique finds that Bensley sourced to scatter around the resort. Settle down on a daybed at science lab-themed cocktail bar Chemistry, where one of the in-house “chemists” will knock you up a creative tipple (yes, that is a gigantic periodic table on the ceiling), whilst the indulgent Chanterelle Spa is inspired by Alice In Wonderland, with suitably surrealistic touches throughout.

Sofitel Singapore City Centre

Sofitel Singapore City Centre, Singapore

Accor Group’s 800th property in Asia-Pacific, this box-fresh hotel throws open its sleek doors in October 2017, bringing a touch of French je ne sais quoi to Singapore’s historic Tanjong Pagar district. Sofitel’s trademark attention to detail is there from the moment you enter the lobby, which features Singapour Je T’aime, a dazzling contemporary art installation of over 700 individual glass crystals. The 223 spacious rooms and suites feature floor-to-ceiling windows from which to soak up the cityscape, along with Sofitel’s signature plush MyBed, plus an outsized bathtub and separate rain shower which are stocked with Lanvin or Hermès amenities. Another perk comes in the form of the complimentary minibar, serviced by Sophie, the hotel’s droid butler, adding a fun and futuristic twist to your Singaporean sojourn.

Kerry Hotel Hong Kong

Kerry Hotel, Hong Kong

It’s been a while since a major hotel opening in Hong Kong – but we reckon the Kerry was worth the wait! Part of the Shangri-La Hotels & Resorts family, this 546-room urban resort is located on Hung Hum’s scenic waterfront and features exactly the right combination of elegant décor (created by celebrated local designer Andre Fu), relaxed luxury and creature comforts to make it a winner with both overseas travellers and stylish staycationers. Opened in spring 2017, it’s no fluke that Instagram is already filled with serene shots of its incredible 25-metre outdoor infinity pool and showstopping views from the 270-degree wraparound terrace at Red Sugar, the hotel’s bar; if you do manage to tear your eyes away from the city’s iconic glittering skyline, look out for inspired design accents that pay homage to the property’s shipyard heritage too.

Hotel Indigo Bali Seminyak

Hotel Indigo Bali Seminyak Beach, Indonesia

Offering a range of stylish and contemporary rooms, suites and spacious villas with an authentic Balinese aesthetic, Hotel Indigo’s new resort launched in July 2017, offering a welcome oasis of tranquillity right within the vibrant destination of Seminyak. Guestrooms are carefully designed to maximise both space and comfort, with private balconies featuring deluxe daybeds, and spa-inspired bathrooms, while the lavish one- or two-bedroom pool villas offer more in the way of space, luxury and seclusion. There are also plenty of thoughtful little touches, such as a manual juicer with complimentary oranges in every room, ensuring a fresh and zesty start to every morning.

citizenm Taipei

citizenM Taipei Hotel, Taiwan

Ideal for a short stay or business trip to Taipei, this latest addition to the CitizenM chain – its first property in Asia – will have you feeling right at home. Cool, contemporary and with a quirky sense of humour (the hotel promises “absolutely no trouser presses or towel swans”!), this sleek space is all about affordable luxury with an extra-large dose of flexibility. The self-service canteenM opens round-the-clock, serving everything from morning cappuccinos to after-work cocktails. Meanwhile, rooms are decorated in a neutral palette of crisp white with warm wooden accents, and feature Italian linens, high-pressure rain showers and smart tablet technology that enables you to control your lighting, climate and even the blackout blinds from the comfort of your own bed. For fuss-free flair, citizenM takes some beating.

Pool at Anantara Guiyang

Anantara Guiyang Resort, China

Guiyang’s breathtaking scenery, clean air and lush greenery has earned it the epithet of China’s “Forest City” – and you can look forward to soaking up all that splendour and more at Anantara Guiyang, the area’s first luxury international resort. 218 rooms, suites and villas provide an understated style of laidback luxury, with private balconies that overlook the surrounding beautiful gardens and majestic mountains; the villas boast oversized bathtubs, private plunge pools and inviting sundecks too. Anantara offers a vast range of excursions to fully explore the area’s fascinating culture, ancient buildings and sweeping natural beauty, but there’s plenty closer to home as well, with outdoor yoga sessions, Asian cooking classes, a tranquil spa, two tropical pool bars, and even four mahjong rooms for you to master the traditional Chinese game.
