Auckland is known as the 'City of Sails' and you can literally see them up close at Viaduct Harbour, home to hundreds of boats and yachts as well as some of the most fashionable real estate and exciting nightlife in the city.
This vibrant commercial and residential area has become the place to see and be seen following its redevelopment for the America’s Cup. Here the countless superyachts, commercial vessels and racing boats are a sight to behold.
Take in the views from a waterfront restaurant as you dine on delicious seafood and fine wine, or enjoy some gelato as you meander the marina. Sailing around Waitemata Harbour allows travellers to see Viaduct Harbour from the water instead of from the shore, so your best option is to climb aboard a boat that offers tours.
There’s plenty to see in the area beyond sails. Visitors can explore New Zealand’s rich maritime history at the Voyager Maritime Museum, which features exhibits on every subject from seaside fashion and shanty music to whaling and early Kiwi settlers.
The museum is open from 9am to 5pm every day except Christmas, and admission options include a harbour cruise. Viaduct Harbour is also host to many events including the America’s Cup, New Zealand Fashion Week and the Auckland International Boat Show, among others, so be sure to check out the event calendar for information on the latest happenings.
After a jaunt about the harbour, head over to the nearby and newly renovated Tepid Baths public pool and fitness facility, which features a 25-metre lap pool, spa and sauna facilities, and a fitness centre. The baths are over 100 years old and a favourite venue in Auckland for both locals and tourists looking for some R&R. Opening hours vary throughout the week, but it's open every day.
