There’s an entire world to discover, with more than 4,000 creatures at the 2.5-hectare Underwater World, one of South-East Asia’s largest marine and freshwater aquariums. Land and sea animals alike will delight you with their bright colors and crazy antics. Combining the educational with the entertaining, this is one of Langkawi’s most popular attractions.
Gab with the giant grouper. Meditate in front of mesmerising, slow-moving jellyfish. Sing with the silly seals. All this fun and more is on offer at Underwater World. This complex of ecosystems and aquariums has been a Langkawi must-see since it opened in 1995.
Founded with the goals of knowledge, education and entertainment in mind, this theme park aims to both build awareness of the importance of conservation and pique your curiosity with its spectacular wildlife.
Start with the underwater experience: meander through the giant, clear-glass tunnel immersed in an aquarium while fish, sharks, stingrays, and turtles swim over your head. Then move onto the exhibit of creatures that live on both land and sea.
See more than 100 species of seashells at the Seashell Display. Next, head to the penguinarium, home to lively penguins galore. Their slipping, sliding and swimming will undoubtedly bring a smile to your face.
You’ll find several ecosystems all under one roof here, including a tropical rainforest and a sub-Antarctic area. With more than 500 species to learn about, you could easily spend all day here.
Underwater World is open daily from 10am to 6pm and from 9:30am to 6:30pm on public and school holidays. Don’t miss the various animal-feeding sessions that take place throughout the day.
You’ll also find a shopping centre and restaurants here, so you can grab both a souvenir and a bite to eat. After your day in the theme park, you may want to head to the nearby beach at Pantai Cenang, which has a reputation for dazzling sunsets over pristine waters. Comb the beach for shells as you dip your toes into the sea.
